Volunteer Profile of the Month

Robin Bateman, London, ON

What do spicy Doritos, red licorice and Mentos have in common? Ask any staff member of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada and they will answer correctly in a matter of seconds. These food items top the list of Robin Batemans favourite snacks. As a dedicated volunteer and strong supporter of the not-for-profit sector, Robin has spent the past three years offering his mailing, filing and cataloging expertise to the organization free of charge. Best of all, hes even willing to share his treats with anyone who crosses his path.

Every Thursday, Robins friendly voice and hearty laugh echoes throughout the office. He can usually be found behind a stack of envelopes near the postage machine or in front of a computer using his self-proclaimed "hunt and peck" method to enter data on the keyboard.

Some prefer to volunteer for a few hours at a time, but Robin likes to put in a full day of six to eight hours. "Its rewarding to go home and know Ive been productive for the day," he explains. Robin believes that volunteering helps to get his mind off his disability rheumatoid arthritis and realize how fortunate he really is. His optimism and energetic personality are reflected in his willingness to learn new skills. "I like to do a variety of things and see whats involved in everyones position," he continues.

Robin is someone who likes to finish a job properly the first time around. For this reason, he is always confirming: "Theres no point in spending the afternoon doing something only to find out you have to go back and change it."

This volunteer has certainly earned himself some popularity points because of his enthusiasm. Robin is always eager to assist others, regardless of the task at hand. "Everybody wants me!" he says between chuckles. Considering his warm and generous nature, its no surprise that he is in such high demand.
