Volunteer Profile of the Month

Lucilia Pontes-Botelho & Rui Botelho

Winnipeg, MB

After her father’s passing three years ago, Lucilia Pontes-Botelho realized how important it was to keep her father’s legacy alive. "He valued being charitable and volunteered his time for a number of causes," she says fondly. Lucilia and her husband Rui knew that making a difference for others affected by a brain tumour was the best way to honour his kind nature.

Over the past two years, Lucilia has organized a community garage sale and a Halloween social in hopes of raising funds and awareness for brain tumour research. In February of 2007, she accepted the role of Winnipeg’s Spring Sprint Coordinator. "Although it was a challenging task to fulfill in such a short period of time, it was an amazing way to cope, as grieving his loss was still so devastating," she explains.

Lucilia feels very fortunate for her husband’s ongoing support and believes he is a key reason for her continued involvement as a volunteer. This past year, the couple came together and worked with a dedicated committee to coordinate the 2008 Winnipeg Spring Sprint. "I have been very blessed to have had the opportunity to join forces with others," Lucilia adds warmly.

Rui and Lucilia believe that as a society, it is our responsibility to take the initiative and take action on the prevalence of this disease. "We should assist the medical professionals in their work towards better treatments, advancements and ultimately a cure," the couple says confidently.

Neither Rui nor Lucilia volunteer with the intention of being rewarded, but the fulfillment they gain through their work makes it all worthwhile: "No matter how significant your contributions may be, you are always making a difference. As a volunteer, you must never underestimate your ability to make a success out of anything you do."
