Volunteer Profile of the Month
Dave D'Entremont, Fredericton, NB
It was a simple brochure that first sparked Fredericton resident Dave D’Entremont’s interest in Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. After being diagnosed with a Central Neurocytoma tumour seven years ago, Dave underwent surgery and feared the possible loss of mobility as he suffered from temporary post-operative paralysis. Dave traveled to his local hospital regularly for check-ups during his difficult period of rehabilitation. While waiting for an appointment, Dave noticed a pamphlet for Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. It was this fluke sighting that prompted his continuing involvement with the organization.
Dave was inspired to raise awareness, so he created a team in the organization’s name to compete in the World Pond Hockey Tournament hosted in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick. In 2004, he accepted the challenge to be Fredericton’s Spring Sprint Coordinator and he continues to fulfill this role. For four years, Dave and his committee members have dedicated themselves to organizing the area’s walkathon event. It certainly isn’t a slow time of year for the D’Entremont family, but Dave insists on volunteering despite his busy work schedule and the hectic yet joyful perks of fatherhood.
After months of preparation, the end result of the Fredericton Spring Sprint is the most rewarding aspect for Dave. "It's so nice to see everything come together. You envision it and when you see the event happening in front of you with people you haven't met before supporting your cause," Dave says enthusiastically. "You realize that all this is happening because of a goal you and some family and friends set after your own experience… that is the moment when you feel you are making a difference. It can be overwhelming and humbling."
Dave also contributes to the organization by acting as a resource for those who have been diagnosed in his area. Many patients and families look to him for information and support because they know he can relate and offer some insight. Dave’s willingness to help and his compassionate nature make him one of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s most commendable volunteers.
