Volunteer Profile of the Month
Charlie & Kathy Prongua
Saskatoon, SK

Saskatoon residents Charlie and Kathy Prongua take a few moments to think before explaining what they feel is the most important aspect of their volunteer position. As co-facilitators of their local Brain Tumour Support group, they regularly call members to inform them of upcoming meetings, but they believe this is just a small part of their role. They share a perspective which is deep rooted in their personal experiences with a brain tumour—a journey which started in October of 2001 after Charlie’s diagnosis. Three years later, the couple saw an advertisement for a new support group in their area and decided to attend the first meeting. They met with the group regularly and a year later, they were approached to facilitate.

When asked about their philosophy as co-facilitators, Charlie and Kathy offer an answer that is reflective of their altruistic nature: "We strive to provide an inviting and warm atmosphere for people to come and feel comfortable to meet, connect and share with others that are experiencing the same challenges that come from living with a brain tumour."

The couple has generously offered their time and energy outside of the support group as well. Charlie and Kathy have volunteered at the Saskatoon Spring Sprint and the Calgary Information Day for a number of years. Their involvement has given hope to patients and families in many ways, but their leadership in the Saskatoon Support Group has truly made a difference. "We hope they find the information and support that they come for and leave feeling better than when they arrive," Kathy says, describing the goal she and Charlie have as co-facilitators.

Charlie and Kathy often express gratitude for the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people through Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, but it is their outstanding commitment to the organization that we are thankful for.
